Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs)

 

Skyl-Tech has developed the "Holy Grail" of steam validation probes: a soft-tipped RTD that is impervious to moisture. RTDs are, in theory, superior to thermocouples in terms of accuracy, precision, and ease of datalogging. However, they have never been very practical for use in steam-saturated environments like freeze dryers, steam sterilizers, and water immersion retorts. This is because the delicate RTD elements have been potted into a metal sheath to protect them from moisture. That approach slows response times, skews readings, and leads to rapid, catastrophic failure when the inevitable leaks develop.

After years of creative materials engineering and torture testing, we have developed a stable, reliable soft-tipped RTD that addresses all of these issues. Skyl-Tech soft RTDs contain no metal in the probe tip, other than the thin probe wires and the platinum traces on the RTD element itself. The only other material the probe contains is solid, fused fluorocarbon.

The compact, FEP-encased tip on our RTD probes looks very similar to a soft-tip Type "T" Thermocouple. But the similarities end there. Thermocouples need constant calibration, expensive data-loggers with cold-junction compensation circuitry, and extreme care to limit inaccuracies due to cold-working and steam damage. Even the best thermocouple on the planet cannot achieve system accuracy better than +/-0.1 degrees Celsius over repeated use cycles. RTDs present none of these problems, require only basic datalogging circuitry that can fit in a handheld device, and are capable of system accuracy better than +/-0.05 degrees Celsius over repeated duty cycles.

Our unique probe-mounting system allows for a hermetic seal with your datalogger system. We can supply soft RTD probes with a threaded, potted seal; a threaded "O" ring seal; or a laser-weldable seal.

Our new, soft-tip RTDs are available as individual probes, in full validation assemblies, and integrated into custom applications for wireless monitoring, food container testing, and BIER vessel monitoring. We have already received enthusiastic responses from manufacturers who have been waiting years for a compact, reliable RTD that is available on an OEM basis.
